Working with Paul

Feedback & Recognition

Core Goal: Identify the most effective ways for us to exchange high-fidelity feedback and celebrate mission success together.

Receiving Feedback

  • Timing:
    • I prefer “Hot Feedback” delivered in the moment or directly after a meeting or event. This allows us to course-correct in real-time while the context is fresh.
  • Format:
    • I have no strong preference for the format. Whether you deliver it in writing beforehand or live in the moment, please choose the method that makes you most comfortable to deliver it effectively.
  • Directness:
    • I value Radical Candor. While we should never be rude, I find “compliment sandwiches” confusing and they often obscure your true intent. Please be direct with your concerns. Note: Do not mistake my passion for the mission as stubbornness; I am always open to feedback that helps us improve.
  • Trigger Words:
    • None at the moment, but I will update this as I encounter any. I encourage you to use the phrase “Can I give you some feedback on X?” to signal that you have a concern you’d like to share.

Giving Feedback

  • How can others expect you to deliver feedback to them?
    • By default, I will send Slack DMs in the moment to provide real-time feedback, followed by a deeper dive in our scheduled 1:1s. However, I am happy to adapt this to your personal preference. If you prefer a different cadence or format, let’s discuss it.
  • What is the best way for someone to “course-correct” you if you’re off track?
    • Please send me a Slack DM. If that doesn’t work or the situation is urgent, please speak up live! I value the mission over my ego and appreciate being held accountable.

Recognition

  • Do you prefer public shout-outs or private notes?
    • I am not historically used to formal recognition and may not always appear to “accept” it well, this is something I am actively working on! Don’t let my reaction discourage you from sharing wins.
  • What kind of recognition feels most meaningful to you?
    • I feel most appreciated when I see the combined efforts of our team recognized in broad communications. Highlighting the team’s impact on the mission is the ultimate “thank you” for me.
